This is the thirteenth year Telemarketing(R) Call Center Soltions(TM) magazine brings you its “Top 50″ Service Agency Ranking. In this issue, were presenting the “Top 50″ outbound portion of the ranking. (The inbound portion of the ranking will be highlighted in the April 1998 issue.) Since its inception in 1986, our “Top 50″ ranking has been used as the benchmark for choosing large-capacity/sized telemarketing service agencies. Since the basis of our ranking is company size, Telemarketing(R) Call Centel Solutions(TM) uses a measurable, third-party-verifiable aspect of telemarketing service to arrive at our list of the “Top 50″ agencies: the number of minutes each agency was billed by each of its phone companies for telephone service for 12 months, encompassing November 1996 through October 1997. We have found this to be an accurate and reliable reflection of the amount of telemarketing each agency does, and therefore, provides a true reflection of its size.
Predictive dialers have come a long way during their first decade of development. Todays advanced systems are combining outbound dialing with inbound ACD functions, host computer screen synchronization, detailed reports and statistics, and computer-telephony interfaces (CTI) with PBX and ACD systems. The term “predictive dialer” is slowly disappearing and is being replaced by more encompassing terms such as “call servers” in order to include both inbound and outbound call processing.

Q:ON DEC. 25, 2006, my wife and I gave our daughter and A: I called the Bank of America media relations in Charlotte, N.C., the banks headquarters, and was referred to San Francisco. When I called San Francisco, I was referred back to Charlotte and after three days of phone-tag with a spokeswoman (not totally her fault), she referred me to a Web site covering the Uniform Commercial Code, which supposedly explains the now-famous rules and regulations. The spokeswoman didnt seem to know how to access the Web site, so told me to call Google.

Private Investigation and Process Serving by Raymond P. Siljander, Charles C. Thomas Publisher, Springfield, Illinois, 2001. Private Investigation and Process Serving contains investigative, protective, and serving concepts; technical information; and investigative recording forms to support operations, all presented in nontechnical language. At the same time, it offers the extensive mental and physical skills required of an effective and competent private investigator and process service representative. Section I covers many quality aspects. It contains outstanding peripheral information involving field tips for process servers with the greatest value to the reader being the manner in which the author illustrates a way of thinking “outside the box” that lends itself to the completion of the investigative mission. This section presents the minimum criteria that private investigators and servers must possess, including a list of tools, equipment, and supplies needed to sustain an investigation and meet the evidence needs of attorneys. It also contains examples and applications of “pretext” investigative techniques, such as establishing and using telephone lines and numbers. The author shares comprehensive undercover investigative and interview strategies by private investigators that law enforcement officers can use when interviewing and interrogating subjects. He discusses techniques of determining the signs of innocence or guilt, identifying and responding to suspect and subject resistance, and understanding “roping” methodologies, including eyewitness identification and testimony aspects.
New law requires PIs to be licensed When F.M. Chris Rey moved back to St. Louis after a career elsewhere in the military and federal government, he set out to get licensed as a private investigator — and was astounded to learn that licenses were not required in his home state. He quickly got involved with the Missouri Association of Private Investigators and has worked for years to get a state law passed requiring licensure. This year, the bill finally succeeded. The law is already on the books, but licensing is not expected to begin until early 2009.
The romance novel lifestyle of a private investigator is pure fiction, much like the books in which they live. Private investigators today are more likely to be working for defense attorneys on homicide cases or extracting evidence from a computer than sitting in a dimly lit bar downing club sodas asking the bartender if they know a gal named Ginger. Meanwhile, more attention is being paid to ethics in an industry that has sometimes lacked professionalism. Locally, several retired law enforcement detectives have opened their own private detective agencies and say they have the background and experience to be successful private eyes. Owen Deatrick formed Dynasty Consultants in 2002 after retiring in 1999 with 28 years in law enforcement, all of them with the Lansing Police Department. His firm handles a variety of a criminal defense investigations, plus insurance fraud and background investigations.

The Museum of Yachting at Newport, Rhode Island, has added another vintage yacht to its fleet. On 28 June the fully-restored cutter Hawk, designed in 1948 by Knud Reimers, sailed across a few miles of lower Narragansett Bay from the Jamestown Boat Yard. After a long career of being stored at various boat yards, her owners Clem Napolitano, Stephen Devoe and Chris Otorowski of the Jamestown Boat Yard gave Hawk to the Museum.

It greets Stephen F. Jones first thing each morning, cheers him on sight, but needs so much attention that Jones had to promise his wife hed be completely responsible before bringing it home. From 11-foot long “troughs” to shapes so shallow they splash at every hand-washing, offbeat basins are increasingly taking center stage in American bathrooms. The odd looks are getting a big push from makers like Kohler, which introduced its Paradox model (it holds only 1 5/8 inch worth of water) and Porcher, with a 12-inch high cone- shaped sink. Over at American Standard, one of the latest is a $352 number that looks like a gargantuan flower. Its all an attempt by the $660 million sink industry to keep sales going at a time when remodeling is expected to start slowing — and there are signs its working. At Home Depots Expo Design Center stores alone, sales of “vessel sinks” have increased 35 percent from 2002. Cutting-edge homeowners, of course, have been installing offbeat sinks for a few years, but now its boomers (higher, above-counter sinks are easier on old backs) and home-renovation fans whove turned bathroom remodeling into a $12.4 billion business, according to Harvards Joint Center for Housing Studies. Now that the looks are catching on beyond design mavens, makers are competing with ever more outlandish models — like a $1,595 sunken pyramid from Porcher and an upcoming “upside down” sink by Sonoma Cast Stone (the water runs down an inverted bowl).

This may be an unpopular position to adopt, but some of us are going to miss him, you know. Of course were aware of his disadvantages - hes got a bit of an obsession with abroad, for example, whether for holidays or invading - but you have only to clock his easy way with the bag containing his Fender Stratocaster to know this is a born entertainer. And he has brought his own unique gifts, whether showing the touch of a Sinatra over his retirement, the ease with a catchphrase - “pretty straight kind of guy”, “45 minutes”, “peerage?” - or the mastery of the telling, colourful and often intriguingly vague detail, whether it be working as a waiter in Paris, or his earlier bid for a free holiday when, as a teenager, he tried to stow away on a jet bound for the Bahamas. Such things cling to him. Fine details around the Miami trip include the hairy landing; the 24 imported privacy protecting palm trees; jamming with the Gibbs; the suggestion that Mrs Gibb, as a bisexual druid, disapproves of tennis, and now, the quiet (presumably in deference to Mrs Gibb) mass in ritzy Palm Beach, complete with Aston Martin. Come on: didnt you also feel an unworthy tinge of regret at promises from the Brown camp of a “humbler”, less showy premiership?

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.

In individual therapy sessions, the therapist may model anxiety-producing behaviors while the client, remaining relaxed, first watches and then imitates them. In therapy involving social skills and assertiveness training, this technique may take the form of behavioral rehearsal, in which the therapist models and then helps the client practice new, more socially adaptive behaviors.
Beyond phobias, modeling has wide application in therapy. Therapists use the modeling technique to illustrate healthy behaviors that clients can learn by example and practice in session. With children, the therapist models a variety of responses to difficult situations. In the situation of dealing with a classroom bully, the therapist models alternate responses in the context of a role play, where the therapist acts as the child initially and the child assumes the role of the bully. Then roles reverse. The child practices the behavior and responses modeled while the therapist portrays the bully. In couples therapy, modeling is used to teach listening and communications skills. With quarreling couples, the therapist models responses to facilitate resolution rather than spiral the discussion downward into name-calling. Modeling has also been used effectively in anger management and in abuse cases.
Schools offer one of the largest arenas for modeling where teachers first demonstrate the behavior they seek, be it classroom decorum or how to work a long division problem. Bandura maintains that self-efficacy may be influenced by modeling. A behavior modeled increases the students belief about what is possible, enhancing the students ability to accomplish the task set forth.

Molecular ModelingA model is a semblance or a representation of reality. Early chemical models were often mechanical, allowing scientists to visualize structural features of molecules and to deduce the stereochemical outcomes of reactions. The disadvantage of these simple models is that they only partly represent (model) most molecules. More sophisticated physics-based models are needed; these other models are almost exclusively computer models.Atomistic modeling can be done in two ways: by applying theory or by using fitting procedures. The fitting procedures are attempts to rationalize connections between molecular structure and physicochemical properties (quantitative structure property relationships, QSPR), or between molecular structure and biological response (quantitative structure activity relationships, QSAR). Usually, a molecules biological response is regressed onto a set of molecular descriptors.

A few weeks ago I was at a vineyard looking at some equipment that can be used with netting. After taking up two hours of the growers time we decided to head up to the tasting room and enjoy a little fruit of the labor. I had a couple of people with me who were from the Eastern part of the country and hadnt had a chance to taste some of the California wines, so they were more than happy to spend some time tasting, and buying, as it turned out. While we were working I had noticed a couple of other vehicles passing through, headed toward the tasting room as well. Once we entered, our host was immediately recognized. The first question out of everyones mouth was, What were you doing out there? When bird control was the answer, I could tell from the look on the faces present that we were in for a show. The next five to ten minutes were spent covering everything from propane cannons to netting to chemicals. The amount of misinformation was amazing. These people clearly felt that anything that had to do with bird control was a complete waste of time, irritating to look at and listen to. Why? Well because, those birds cant possibly be that damaging to your wine-grapes - theyre just little birds after all. When you have enough experiences like this you begin to get a feel for the public perception regarding animal damage control. As a grower or winemaker you are involved so heavily in the industry that some things are taken for granted. Everyone realizes that gophers, ground squirrels, starlings and finches are vineyard pests who damage grapes - right? Wrong. A very large percentage of your customers, lets say 75% conservatively, do not think you have any sort of problems with wildlife. What do you think of when you see a deer, or a covey of quail, or some cottontail rabbits in your vineyard? I can guarantee that the terms, Oh, how cute, or Hey, look at those deer dont usually come to mind. I cant print what usually comes to mind for most growers. However, for the people that we encountered in the aforementioned tasting room, as well as for a large percentage of your customer base, seeing wildlife is all part of the vineyard experience.
Useful tables of information and focused lists of suggested readings. Emphasis on such techniques as mechanical control of pests, uses of beneficial insects and pheromones to control pests, traps, and non-toxic compounds as alternatives to toxic chemical. Interesting section on how and why weeds survive so well.

One of Brian McNamees lawyers said Sunday he believed the Justice Department will open a criminal investigation into Roger Clemens denials of doping. Meantime, the chairman of a congressional committee said comments attributed to one of the pitchers lawyers could be interpreted as trying to intimidate a federal law enforcement official. “I think there will be a criminal prosecution after Wednesday, and that means there will be grand jury proceedings and subsequent proceedings,” said Richard Emery, one of McNamees attorneys. “I dont see theres any possibility that Brian has any jeopardy. I only see the possibility of Clemens getting investigated by Justice, whether or not Congress refers it.”
Fourteen years after its release, My Cousin Vinny retains a devoted audience in the criminal defense legal community. This spring, two presenters at a National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers conference used clips from the movie to teach young lawyers the finer points of voir dire, cross-examination and trial strategy. Several other criminal defense lawyers told Lawyers USA they routinely cite scenes from the movie to illustrate key legal points - both with other attorneys and their clients. Most movies dont really get into trial procedure, but My Cousin Vinny does, Miller said. Movies are great because they dramatize and bring a reality - even when fictional or funny - to law in action in a way that the classroom does not. Even a sensationalized scene like the Cruise-Nicholson confrontation in A Few Good Men, tells the student that courtroom drama plays out in real life, although admittedly rarely in the stark form that Hollywood offers.
A RETIRED senior judge has called for people convicted of serious criminal offences to be allowed to practise as lawyers provided they can show they have rejected crime. Sir Stephen spoke out after the appointment of Mark Leech, a former armed robber, as a legal consultant to a firm of solicitors in Liverpool. Mr Leech, who served eight years of a 13-year sentence, obtained a law degree from London University after doing a correspondence course while an inmate at Blundeston prison in Suffolk. But he has been told by the Law Society that he would not be able to obtain a practising certificate as a solicitor because he has a previous conviction for dishonesty. Sir Stephen said it was time for the legal profession to accept that people could reform. He said: “I dont think you ought to be cut out of any professional post for life. I dont think you could come straight out of nick and become a solicitor but if you have shown integrity over a period you ought to be allowed to.” Mr Leech said: “We have paid the price. Surely we dont have to go on paying for ever more? What I would like to see is a situation like that in the United States, where people can come out of prison and qualify and practise as lawyers in their own right.” The former armed robber started work last week at solicitors A S Law. He will specialise in handling cases involving prisoners who are bringing legal actions over such things as medical negligence, prison disciplinary matters and failure of mandatory drug tests. He is also keen to assist prisoners he believes are victims of miscarriages of justice. His first “client” is Henry “Big H” McKenney, who is serving life after being convicted of four contract killings in 1981. There was no forensic science evidence against McKenney, who was convicted on the word of a fellow east London criminal, Bruce Childs, who this week boasted from jail that he had committed five other murders as well as the six for which he is convicted. Mr Leech, who is also chairman of Unlock, the national association of ex-offenders, said: “Unlike other people who give legal advice to prisoners, I am able to understand the prisoners perspective because I have been in prison.” A Law Society spokesman said that a criminal conviction would almost certainly mean a practising certificate would be refused. Similarly, a conviction for a serious offence would mean that a practising solicitor would be struck off by the Office for the Supervision of Solicitors. In Scotland, people with previous convictions can be allowed to practise if they can convince a committee of senior legal officials that they have fully reformed.

Spiceworld - The Movie (PG) Forget Arnie, Sly, Demi, Disney or even that Cruise geezer. With Christmas wrapped and their chart-busting Too Much predictably slotted in at No. 1, a very timely debut dose of big- screen Girl Power succeeds the Full Monty as this year-ends British film biggie.
You can almost see the over-saturated colors of this epic, especially when the blood of unsuspecting characters runs down dark paneled wood walls. The body count would almost be as high as in real life, though the consequences would be a bit more permanent. And the irony of Tarantino–known for his use of GM vehicles in his movies, especially Chevrolets and Cadillacs–and Weller–the half-man, half-machine cop in a post-apocalyptic Detroit choked with 6000 SUX sport sedans and Taurus police cars–working together on this project is almost too much to endure. Tarantinos penchant for framing characters in doorways, having minor characters deliver their dialog off-camera, and having at least one scene shot from inside a car trunk are tailor-made for an auto industry feature film. This unconventional story telling format is well suited to an industry that thinks of itself as linear and logical, but often is anything but coherent. In fact, Tarantino could use the retrospective tone found in Reservoir Dogs, the non-linear approach of Pulp Fiction, and the chapter-by-chapter format of the Kill Bill series in one movie. It would take a deft hand to keep the story flowing and the audience from becoming totally confused, but there can be no doubt the effect would be as close to real life as you could get without actually sitting through a series of mind-numbing meetings that reduce relatively simple concepts to nearly impenetrable complexity. However, the effect would keep fans coming back to determine the importance of each plot twist, and trying to ascertain just what each character actually contributes to the proceedings. And industry employees might find that their spouses and children are much more sympathetic toward–and scared of–them than ever before as they watch mindless arguments about product cadence and market psychographics morph into cartoon violence. Though its doubtful theyll ever understand why their relatives in the industry chuckle and laugh out loud as another character is caught in his own web of intrigue and dispatched with cruel efficiency. Now, thats a movie Id pay to watch. By Christopher A. Sawyer, Executive Editor, csawyer@autofieldguide.com

Assembling cabinets yourself can free up money for other kitchen detailsCabinets devour kitchen budgets. So cutting comers with them can allow you to upgrade other parts of a remodel. While aesthetics, not low cost, drove the design choices in architect Jon Stoumens kitchen in Healdsburg, California, the remodel also shows how this creative trick can work for limited budgets.First, Stoumen and his family rigorously studied the Ikea catalog. Once they had measured out and triple-checked exactly what they needed and how it would all fit together, they borrowed a track and made a weekend run to Los Angeles. With unassembled frames, doors, hinges, pulls, and other accessories in tow, they headed back north to put the parts together.
Out for views, up for light: those are the directions this tall, four-sided bay takes to gain garden views. Since the shallow pitch of the existing roof would have cramped the high, open greenhouse look the Starrs wanted, designer Linda Thornton of Carmel, California, gave the bay an octagonal roof of its own. It rises almost 3 feet above the existing roof, radiating from a central point above the eave line. Half of it notches into the old roof; the other half extends beyond to top the four glass walls. Only three support posts obstruct garden views through the glass panes. Outside, a planter wraps around the base of the bay, softening the expanse of concrete patio.

The Internet has made shareware the computer enthusiasts hottest commodity. Dont you think its time to cash in on these near-free utilities? Downloadable software comes in two flavors: shareware, which is sold on the honor system and requires you to send a check to the creator if you use it; and free ware, which, as the name implies, provides a program that you can use without charge. There is a third type of downloadable software also available. Termed demoware, these are downloadable demos of commercial software that you can use to test a programs basic functionality. Typically, these programs omit key features and disable after a time. Its not recommended that you use shareware to outfit your entire computer–although its likely youll be able to find almost everything you need in shareware form. Shareware is often a great adjunct to the programs you use on a daily basis. Additionally, shareware often gives your computer functionality you never knew it could have. Because a shareware application is typically developed by a dedicated software designer with a strong personal vision, youll find utilities that supplement your current suite of programs in ways youve never imagined.
Southwestern Bell is hoping to meet the needs of small and home- based businesses with a new product designed to allow customers to use their computers like a telephone. The company Tuesday announced it has launched its new software, PC Phone Manager, in Oklahoma to offer its customers a way to integrate computers and telephone service. This marks the companys entry into the growing computer telephony integration market — an industry expected to account for $3.3 billion in 1996, according to Rick Wilson, product manager for Southwestern Bell.

Hair, Beautiful hair On meeting someone, hair style and colour are often the salient features we notice, significantly influencing our first impression. Possibly because it resists decay after death, through the ages hair has come to symbolize love, strength and power.
Hair Dyes and Hair TreatmentsHair has no vital function in the human body but provides an outward sign of health and social communication. The history of hair coloring dates from ancient dynasties of Egypt and China where mineral and plant dyes were widely available to cosmeticians. Through the ages, women in particular have dyed their hair to hide grayness and to improve their appearance.
very Saturday afternoon, in living rooms all around the country, whole families would sit transfixed by the feats of a man sporting a pencil thin moustache, lurid satin suit, scarlet nail polish and crimping tongs. Amazingly, the rather more modern hairdressers portrayed by Amanda Holden and Sarah Parish in BBC1s new salon-based drama Cutting It can trace their lineage directly back to Raymond of Mayfair. Despite his ridiculous name, Mr Teasy Weasy set in motion a process that would change the way we all thought about our hair and, in particular, our hairdresser. The hairdressers has always been a social hub. In every salon on every high street a million confidences have been shared. But the phenomenon initiated by that phoney Frenchman, Raymond, meant that hairdressers were no longer only instrumental in personal change but in social change too. In the Sixties and Seventies the hairdressing salon became a locus of social upheaval. People of different class, age and provenance mixed freely - in front of and behind the reception desk, accompanied by the constant background whoosh of the hairdryer and the smell of ammonia.

PHOENIX–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 26, 1997–During March and April, APS is offering rebates on landscape lighting fixtures that can beautify a home while enhancing nighttime safety and security. In addition, APS customers can attend free design and installation seminars and have a chance to win a professional landscaping makeover. Unlike most plastic fixtures, metal lasts longer and requires less maintenance over time. These low-voltage systems are easy to install because they require no deep digging or conduit. And because they use energy-efficient halogen bulbs, they cost just pennies a night to operate.
After The Sun Goes Down, Your Garden takes on a new dimension. Most gardeners plan for their landscapes to be viewed during daylight hours, but landscape lighting can extend your enjoyment into the evening. Lighting makes your garden come alive, highlighting the curved branches of a Japanese maple or lighting a rippling pond. Soft light shows off the artistry of flowers, shrubs, trees and landscape accents in a new and different way. The use of low-voltage lighting has dramatically increased in the last five years. Many do-it-yourself lighting kits can be installed in a weekend. The case of installation lets you focus more time and energy on designing and enjoying the lighting system. The first step is deciding what type of nighttime atmosphere you want to achieve. Well-executed lighting is subtle, so observe how different home landscape are lighted when you walk or drive around at night. Make notes of the ideas you like.

TWO exhausted asylum seekers trying to paddle across the Channel in an inflatable dinghy were rescued by a fishing boat yesterday. The couple, who speak no English and have no passports, were later put ashore at Dover.
Meanwhile, inquests were opened and adjourned yesterday on two holidaymakers who died in sea tragedies in the West Country earlier this week. A post- mortem examination revealed that Martin Anderson, 32, from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, drowned after being swept into the sea at Porthleven, west Cornwall. Robert Needham, of North Finchley, north London was recovered from the sea after getting into difficulties while swimming at West Bexington, Dorset, on Thursday, but was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Business Editors, High Tech Writers Banks handle millions of transactions a day, diligently checking each one to ensure that it is done accurately and correctly.
The so-called hard money lenders-mortgage lenders who for a price will finance real estate properties that dont meet the specifications of prime lenders have gone mainstream in a way that was virtually unthinkable only a year ago, say executives at Pergolis Swartz Associates. Hard money lenders played a key role last fall when borrowers lost their commitments from Wall Street and needed quick money to rescue their deals. In numerous cases, these hard money lenders stepped into the breach and saved the day. Hard money lenders also have been instrumental in bringing a class of properties to market that prime lenders avoid. Thanks to their financing, millions of square feet of renovated problem properties have been put back into productive use and economic viability. The hard money lenders have become almost institutional at this point, said Jerry Swartz, a principal of Pergolis Swartz Associates. There are so many viable deals our there today that just dont meet the criteria of the prime lenders or the Wall Street conduits, that the hard money lenders have become an extremely important part of the mortgage financing scene.

He exercises a degree of art, as well, because these finely tuned creations are used by artists throughout the country. Mayes, whose workshop is in his home near Lake Thunderbird, claims to be the only maker of hand-built custom guitars in Oklahoma. “I started doing this three years ago,” he said. “I read this book and decided I wanted to make a career of building guitars.”

Criminal law, 4th ed.
Wholesale changes are on the way in Oklahoma County for everyone involved in the practice of criminal law. Judges, lawyers, administrators, law officers, defendants and support staff will all be affected. The changes in criminal practice in Oklahoma County will be significant. This week Ill highlight some of the changes, which are intended to more efficiently utilize limited criminal justice resources. Over the decades, criminal dockets in the states largest county had become a hodgepodge of conflicting and confusing components. Court hearings requiring the appearance of lawyers and defendants included arraignments, pretrials, preliminary hearings, jury call dockets, motion dockets, plea dockets, revocation and acceleration dockets, cost dockets, sentencing dockets and trial dockets. Frequently, prosecutors, defense attorneys and even defendants were scheduled to be in two or more different courtrooms at the same time.

The search for a missing southern Utah man is getting a boost from a team of private investigators. The Private Investigator Association of Utah is volunteering some of its members time and skills to help track down Christopher Coan. Its a case that has perplexed police and left his family heartbroken. Coan, 18, vanished from a Subway shop in Iron County on Sept. 3, 2007. He left his drivers license, clothing and money behind. His 1994 maroon and silver Chevy S-10 Blazer with stickers on the back window hasnt been found. The temporary license tag expired in October, and the vehicle has been listed as missing in a national crime database.
The pin-hole camera picks up the man knocking on the door of a council flat. The fuzzy edge of the circular image lends a covert feel to the scene, which is being taped for use as evidence. The on-screen time stamp ticks over as the bearded man bends to call through the letter- box. A moment later a man opens the door and ushers in the visitor. Is this a buyer visiting his drug dealer? Or just one friend calling on another? The time-lapse video monitors the flat 24 hours a day. A neighbour has complained of slamming doors at all times of the day and night. The council has to check the allegation and gather evidence to use in court, if necessary. The complainant is too scared to testify against the tenants, so the council is using private detectives to search for information. Phil works for Burgess PDQ, a detective agency that his father, Steve, runs from a three-room office suite near Manchesters main shopping area. The agencys first taste of council work came 18 months ago when Salford wanted to gather information on a nuisance case. Since then the agency has investigated cases involving drugs, noise, harassment and car crime.

The Good, the Bad and the Queen, Damon Albarns latest act of musical reinvention, enters the chart at No 2 and is evidence of the Gorillaz mans genuinely questing musical spirit; may The View prove to have a similarly far-sighted outlook.
If anyone should be an inspiration to the legions of non-Latin Europeans dutifully signing on for GCSE salsa classes, Larry Harlow should. Jewish, and the son of a band leader and an opera singer, Harlow veered abruptly towards Latin street music, rather than jazz or the classics at the Music Art High School in New York in the 1950s. “We were right beside Spanish Harlem - I used to listen to the music in the Latino grocers shops.” In the 1960s and 1970s his novel rearrangements of trombone, trumpet, violin and flute sections moved him to the centre of New Yorks Latin scene, working with artists like Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barreto and Willie Colon, the generation whose tough new hybrid sound first came to be called salsa. Harlow was the first artist to be signed by the seminal Fania label, co-wrote the Latin rock opera Hommy (Mark 2 version on the way), played for the famous Mohammed Ali-George Foreman fight in Zaire (a fiasco: everyone came for the fight, not the concert). The last decade has been spent with his own band touring the world. Last year conga ace Ray Barreto had the idea, inspired by the “fantasy band”, an ad hoc group of jamming jazz stars, of reconvening Harlow, himself, singer Adalberto Santiago and cuatro player Yomo Toro as the Latin Legends Band. Thus Harlow makes his first ever London appearance on Saturday (Barreto is a regular performer and Santiago was here last year). No longer a breath- bating prospect, perhaps, but a most intriguing one.
Oasis, meanwhile, are set to receive an Outstanding Contribution to Music gong, endorsing a band of musical luddites whose excellent debut album inaugerated an era of lumpen pub rockers suspicious of anything vaguely musically adventurous. So can we put in an early bid for Showaddywaddy getting something next time round?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has issued a committee opinion (similar to a position statement) on vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy. The statement urges that it is essential that obstetrician-gynecologists recognize the possible health hazards of excessive use of vitamin A supplements prior to conception or during early pregnancy. Concerns have been raised in Europe about the possibility that a pregnant woman might obtain a potentially teratogenic dose of vitamin A by eating liver. Some samples of calf liver from Europe have been found to contain extraordinarily high levels of vitamin A. Retail samples from US markets, however, appear to contain much lower levels of the vitamin and would not be expected to be toxic. Because dietary vitamin A intakes in the US are generally adequate, routine vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy is not recommended. If supplements are taken, a dose of 500 IU/day should be considered the maximum intake prior to and during pregnancy. Most prenatal vitamin preparations contain 5000 IU or less, but some over-the-counter products contain 25,000 IU or more. Women who are or may become pregnant and who are using high doses of vitamin A supplements should be cautioned about the potential teratogenicity.
In the 1940s, several uncontrolled studies suggested that vitamin [B.sub.6] could be used to treat nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy. However, in 1979, the American Medical Association Council on Drugs concluded that there was no solid evidence of efficacy. Vitamin [B.sub.6] treatment did not improve nausea ratings in the group as a whole or in patients with mild to moderate nausea, but there was a significant improvement in ratings in patients with severe nausea. Of the 12 patients with severe nausea who received vitamin [B.sub.6], only one continued to have severe nausea after therapy, compared with five of 10 in the placebo group. Vitamin [B.sub.6] was also effective against vomiting. After treatment, only eight of 31 patients receiving vitamin [B.sub.6] had any vomiting, compared with 15 of 28 receiving placebo, a significant difference.
Studies of pregnant women in the United States report that average vitamin A (retinol) intakes are higher than the recommended dietary allowance. The objectives of a study recently published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association were to determine if vitamin A supplements are necessary for pregnant women in the first trimester in a population at low nutritional risk, to characterize use of vitamin A-containing supplements in this population, and to determine if supplementation provides excessive amounts of retinol. In the absence of a tolerable upper intake level for vitamin A, excessive retinol intake is defined as twice the RDA ([is greater than] 1600 retinol equivalents). Sixty-four healthy, middle-to-upper-income women in the first trimester of pregnancy, who were patients of three physicians, participated in the study. Two of the physicians prescribed prenatal vitamin/mineral supplements. The third physician followed the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine and did not routinely prescribe prenatal supplements. Of those for whom prenatal vitamin/mineral supplements were not prescribed (n = 29), 17 (58%) self-supplemented. The women completed a questionnaire that inquired about lifestyle, health, and dietary habits, including use of nutritional supplements. They also completed a three-day food record, including two weekdays and one weekend day. Twenty of the subjects (31%) did not meet the RDA for vitamin A from food sources. Forty-four women (69%) used vitamin A-containing supplements. Of those who used supplements, 23% did not meet the RDA from food sources, and 10 of the 20 who did not use supplements did not meet the RDA. Mean intake of vitamin A from food sources was 159 [+ or -] 116% of the RDA and mean energy intake was 2059 [+ or -] 447 kcal. Mean vitamin A intake from food and supplements was 250 [+ or -] 181% of the RDA. All women who used supplements met the RDA for vitamin A when the combination of food and supplements was considered. Ten women consumed excess retinol, with only one of the women consuming too much retinol from food sources (primarily beef liver, fortified breakfast cereals, and fortified skim milk) alone. Nine of the 10 women who consumed excess retinol were users of over-the-counter supplements, as opposed to prescribed prenatal supplements.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

One major difference between herbal remedies and medications made by drug companies is that pharmaceuticals are the devil you know and have been rigorously tested before being permitted on the market. Their possible dangers are spelled out on the package insert. By contrast, the safety profile of most herbal medicines is not listed. People who take herbal preparations should be aware of the sparse regulations governing their use. Most herbal remedies are not legally permitted to be sold as medications in Canada, but are classified as foods. And. since theyre regarded as foods, warning labels are not required. Only a few herbal products bear federal Drug Identification Numbers (DIN) approving their sale as drugs. After centuries of experience, the most highly toxic plants have been eliminated from the herbalists stock-in-trade. Lily-of-the-valley, daffodil, deadly nightshade, jimsonweed and hemlock are among substances banned by Health and Welfare Canada for sale as foods or in food. But reports about the adverse effects of some herbal remedies are surfacing, ranging from minor to serious, from lethal poisonings to allergic reactions. Some of the adverse effects reported from herbs include those from: camomile tea (severe allergic shock), liquorice tonics (heart problems), comfrey (liver toxicity) and oleander tea (dizziness). In one recent case, a woman who mistook oleander for eucalyptus died after drinking the tea. In another an elderly couple died within 24 hours of overdosing on digitalis, mistaking poisonous foxgloves for comfrey. Plants containing pyrrolizidine (e.g., Golden senecio or ragwort) are of increasing concern owing to reports of liver disease from consuming this substance. especially for long periods. Gordolobos tea containing this ingredient - widely consumed in the Southern U.S. - is no longer considered safe. Harmful overdoses of herbal products are most likely when theyre made into strong herbal teas, steeped for 10-20 minutes or more. For examels. liquorice contains chemicals that, taken in large quantities, can cause sodium and water retention, high blood pressure and even cardiac arrest. In addition, herbal remedies can interact with OTC drugs. Some plants such as tonka beans, melilot and woodruff that increase bleeding should not be consumed by those regularly taking ASA (e.g., Aspirin). Several herbs - such as hellebore and hawthorn -can potentiate the effects of the heart medication, digoxin. Others such as bayberry, juniper and St. Johns wort are diuretics that should not be taken by those On prescribed diuretics. In the final analysis, shopping for herbal products is a matter of caveat emptor: buyer beware!
Male-pattern baldness usually starts with receding hair at the temples, often combined with a balding spot at the back of the head and slowly spreads, ultimately leaving just a horse-shoe-shaped fringe. The hair shedding is speeded up by: advancing age, an inherited tendency to hair loss and an overabundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone within the hair follicle. Balding men possess above-average amounts of dihydrotestosterone in the balding scalp follicles. Some of the anti-balding remedies aim to alter the hormonal balance in the hair follicle in an attempt to shut down or reduce hair loss. When Health News last discussed baldness cures in December 1994, we mentioned a University of Toronto study that was about to begin on the efficacy of finasteride or Proscar, a drug used for benign prostate hyperplasia (enlargement), with a possible role in decreasing prostate cancer risks. The results of that study have now shown this substance to be an effective baldness remedy for some people. It inhibits the 5-alpha reductase (enzyme) that transforms testosterone into the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) form responsible for triggering the gene that causes hair loss. Blocking the production of DHT seems to stimulate growth of stronger, thicker and more pigmented hair. In a previous multicentre study reported in 1995, 200 males aged 18 to 35 with distinct baldness had a one-inch circle of scalp shaved and periodically examined for hair growth. The study found that men taking 5 mg per day of oral finasteride had significantly increased hair growth. The majority of men in this study had moderately increased hair growth. Candidates considered suitable for finasteride treatment were men who had already fathered all the children they wished to, as its use for baldness might be lifelong and it could harm any fetus conceived. Further studies showed that far lower amounts of the drug are equally effective in stopping hair loss.

Dont get me wrong. I like politics, I even like politics on television. At midnight I like nothing better than watching Andrew Neil chuckling over the events of the day with hollow-eyed MPs and hacks. Theres much to be enjoyed in Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday afternoons, even though at the moment we have a Leader of the Opposition who isnt especially good at asking questions and a Prime Minister who is especially good at not answering them. But I welcome the BBCs decision to remove live coverage of party political conferences from terrestrial television. For years, these annual tribal gatherings of the politically committed have turned viewers off politics, on to opposing parties, or on to another channel. During their long years in the wilderness, and for decades before that, the Labour Party had vibrant, argumentative debates in which a group of people, all espousing belief in the brotherhood of man, viciously attacked everyone and everything they did not happen to agree with. Year after year, stern trade unionists condemned even sterner party leaders; one wing of the party flapped at the other. Fear and loathing in Blackpool or Brighton.

Handbook of RAFT polymerization.
Reptiles on rafts Prior to the closing of the Central American isthmus the West Indies was open to the Pacific and rafts of red mangrove carried organisms out into the Pacific currents. This is how the ancestors of the three endemic Galapagos iguana species are believed to have reached those remote islands off the Ecuadorian coast. Even more surprisingly, the Southern Equatorial Current is believed to have carried rafts of West Indian red mangrove westwards across the Pacific before turning south towards Fiji and Tonga. This is believed to be the route followed by the ancestors of the two rare Fijian iguanas and three western Pacific boas which are the only representatives of their families in the Melanesian/Polynesian region otherwise inhabited by agamas and pythons. Physiotherapy resolves urinary incontinence caused by prostate cancer surgery, said M. Van Kampen and associates at University Hospital, Leuven, Belgium. Within 3 months, physiotherapy resolved urinary incontinence in 88% of 48 patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy. In comparison, continence was regained in 56% of 50 control patients by 3 months. This is the first randomized controlled study of this use of physiotherapy they said (Lancet 355[9198]:98-102, 2000). Weekly physiotherapy consisted of pelvic-floor muscle exercises and biofeedback. The control group received sham electrotherapy. Both were treated until continence was regained or for up to 1 year.
What is physiotherapy? It is a science-based healthcare profession which views movement as being central to the health and well-being of individuals. Physio- therapists identify and maximise movement potential through health promotion, preventative healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation. What are the specialist areas of physiotherapy?

HOW MANY would have thought that the pest control business could mean big bucks for entrepreneurs in the country? Well, hows this for starters? The estimated total business turnover of the pest control industry in Malaysia is about RM80 million. As Dr Lee Chow Yang, Associate Professor (Urban
Preventative measures are best defense Robert Wade has seen his share of insects this summer.
Pocket gophers are fossorial (burrowing) rodents–so named because they have fur-lined pouches outside the mouth, one on each side of the face. These pockets, which are capable of being fumed inside out, are used for carrying food. Pocket gophers are powerfully built in the forequarters and have a short neck; the head is fairly small and flattened. The forepaws are large-clawed and the lips close behind large incisors. This feature allows them to use their incisors for digging without getting a mouthful of dirt, a unique feature to gophers. There are over 30 species of pocket gophers in the Western Hemisphere. Pocket gophers vary in size from 5 1/2 inches in length to over 13 inches in length. Litter sizes vary from one to 10 but typically average three to four. In the northern part of their range they have one litter per year, as opposed to up to two in the southern ranges. Young gophers are dispersed above ground and are capable of swimming as well on the search for suitable habitat to begin new burrow systems. Pocket gophers feed in three ways: they feed on roots, above-ground vegetation, and they pull vegetation into their tunnel to be stored in food caches for later consumption. In the vineyard, pocket gophers girdle vines, damage roots systems (most often in new plantings), and cause multiple-irrigation problems by promoting erosion and damaging drip lines. They are solitary little beasts, vigorously maintaining and defending their tunnel system. Depending on the species and available habitat, gopher population density may vary from six to eight per acre, to up to 62 per acre. Gophers do not hibernate and only cohabitate during the breeding season The burrowing activity of one gopher produces up to 70 mounds in one month. So how do you control such an active but solitary rodent? The fact that a gopher is solitary works to your advantage. You have three basic pest management tools for gopher control: Biological control, chemical control and trapping.
